Changes in grassland have been proposed to increase albedo. Grassland has an albedo of about 20%. This technique can give 0.64 W/m2 of globally averaged negative forcing, which is a minor contribution to offset the positive forcing from a doubling of CO2
Selecting or genetically modifying crops with high albedo has also been proposed. Wheat has an albedo between 13 and 25%; the albedo of the barley crops ranges from 14% to 36%. Temperate areas may experience a 1 °C cooling as a result of this technique. The technique can give 0.44 W/m2 of globally averaged negative forcing, which as in grassland management is insufficient to offset the positive forcing from a doubling of CO2 but may be a solution to combat global warming.
